Thoughts and Actions Bring about Change: It's Your Choice

What we ponder and what we think about sets the course of our life.  Any day  we wish, we can discipline ourselves to change it all.  Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge.  Any day we wish, we can start a new activity.  Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change.  We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing.  We can pretend rather than perform.  And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are.  We can choose to rest over labour, entertain over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence.  The choices are ours to make.  But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause.  As Shakespeare uniquely observed, "the fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves."  We created our circumstances by our past choices.  We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today.

                                    ... Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn is a profound motivational speaker... this is just one of his gems!

We all know that our thoughts are crucial in determining our life... and we all know that it's up to us, and only us, to make changes in our life.

How often have you wanted something in your life to change?  How often have you thought, or said, that you are going to do something for example, lose weight, quit smoking, get a better job... but then not actually taken action to make it happen?

I know I have frequently throughout my life, particularly in relation to losing a few kg of weight... but I also know that saying I want some change in my life is not enough... I have to take action on that thought.  And not just hit and miss action... but consistent action until I achieve the change I desire in my life.

And whether I take action or not... is my choice.  So if I want to change some part of my life, I need to take action to make that change happen.  If I don't take action, my life will stay the same... nothing will change.

Read the quote from Jim Rohn several times... really absorb it... and ask yourself if there is some part of your life you would like to change.  Then make a decision to take action on bringing about that change... and when you have made the decision, choose to take action now.  No matter what action you take... choose to take it right now!

Remember: it's your choice whether your life will change in the direction you want it to... or whether it will stay as it is.

It's your choice... and your choice only!

Is there something you'd like to change in your life... but you keep putting off taking appropriate action?  Click on the comment link below and let me know what that is... and also let me know if you would like some assistance in taking the action to create the change in your life that you desire.

My e-course, The Inside Secrets of How to Achieve Life Changing Goals... Revealed!  can help you clarify what you want to achieve, and help you develop a workable and easy to accomplish plan of action so that you can achieve the changes in your life that you desire.  Go to http://www.aspirationsplus.com/alcgpromo.html  and begin bringing about the changes in your life that you've wanted.

How Do You Enjoy and Celebrate Life?

Sometimes we get caught up in our daily schedule, commitments and responsibilities that we don't stop to think about what we enjoy about our life.

Undoubtedly there are many things we do throughout the day that are mundane or ordinary... some may be not very pleasant... but in amongst the things we do that are less than memorable, certain things bring us pleasure and make us feel good and "warm and fuzzy".

One of the major principles of the Law of Attraction is that what you focus on, persists in your life... therefore if we focus on what we enjoy in our life, what makes us happy... what gives us that warm fuzzy feeling... we will bring more of those sorts of experiences into our life.

Taking time to reflect on what makes us feel good, and what we enjoy, lifts our spirits and energy... it puts us in a better frame of mind... and gives us a much-needed boost.

I came across the video "42 Ways To Celebrate and Enjoy Life"... and I thought you may enjoy it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBqsWDaUdHM&feature=related

After watching this video I began making a list of all the things that I enjoy about my life... it was a great exercise to do.  Spending time with those I love was on top of my list... my list also included watching sunsets, being around trees, going to the mountains, going to the ocean, wearing my slippers on a cold day (as it is now), finishing a project, dark chocolate... and many many other things.

What would be on your list?  Click on the comment link below and let me know the things you enjoy... it would be great to hear from you.

Crossroads: Time for a Change

Many people experience a crossroad in their life... that point in their life where they feel stuck or they know something in their life needs to change.  And some people experience many crossroads at different times!

Crossroads typically occur during middle age and can happen as a result of significant changes in your life e.g. after divorce or separation, perhaps after the death of someone close, children not being as dependent, retiring, leaving work... and is typically marked by feelings of "What Do I Do Now???"

Sometimes crossroads sneak up on us... we get an inkling that we are not happy as we know we can be, we're not enjoying the things we used to, we haven't got the same enthusiasm for many of the things we have to do, we experience feelings of regular unhappiness, emptiness, and unfulfilment.

Even though crossroads in our life can be uncomfortable and daunting... they provide an incredible opportunity to take stock of our life, and do things that we truly want to do and achieve in our life.

Many times, however, we don't know what we want to change or how to initiate the change.

Here are a couple of suggestions to help you get through this:

  • take time out for yourself
  • reflect on what you are doing in your life now
  • think about what you have always wanted to do but never had the opportunity to do
  • begin to do things you would like to do e.g. perhaps take up a sports such as golf, go to classes to learn something you've always wanted to know about
  • talk to others you know who are also experiencing a crossroad in their life
  • find someone, such as a counsellor, who can help you through this period

I've had several crossroads in my life... times when I've felt a strong desire to change aspects of my life.  About 10 years ago I changed careers... I changed from counselling to designing and printing stationery!  Quite a change!  I returned to counselling 5 years later.  And then the most recent crossroads in terms of my career has been from moving away from face-to-face counselling to online work!  Again... it represented a huge change for me.

But crossroads don't just occur in your career... they can happen in your personal life, family life, where you live!

The secret is: embrace crossroads as an amazing opportunity for change!  For change that you can decide what is most fulfilling for you!

Have you ever experienced crossroads in your life?  Click on the comment link below and let me know your experiences and how you dealt with it.  It's always good to hear from you.

A Little Inspiration -- Law of Attraction Video

I was looking for a little Inspiration to share with you and came across this great 4.36 minute video on The Law of Attraction...

Whether you know much about the Law of Attraction or not, this video will give you a boost of Inspiration and Motivation.

You can watch the video by clicking on the link below:

I enjoy these videos... they are short, sharp and to the point in the messages they deliver.

The underlying message is that we all have it in us to lead and inspire others... and it's important to remember that everyone has that ability! My favourite quote in the video is: "Be the change you want to see in the world"... Gandhi.

Take a look for yourself... and let me know what you think.  Click on the comment link below and share your thoughts... it would be great to hear from you!

Disappointment: not the best of experiences!!

Disappointment, the feeling of dissatisfaction we have when something doesn't happen or turn out the way we expected it to, is a lousy experience!

Each person experiences all kinds of disappointments throughout their life... some disappointments are easier to deal with than others.  For example, the disappointment experienced from missing a good deal on a flight is somewhat easier to deal with than the disappointment of having your long-awaited holidays being cancelled at the last minute.

Disappointment arises from:

  • outside us e.g. someone not doing what they said they would do, arriving at a concert to find that it had been cancelled
  • our own actions e.g. being on a diet and going really well but eating a block of chocolate because you were bored, not completing a report on time because something good was on TV that you wanted to watch

When we are disappointed it creates negative feelings within us and it is also associated with negative and self-limiting thoughts e.g. "I'm not good enough", "nothing goes right for me", "I knew it wouldn't work out"... these negative thoughts and emotions have an impact on our behaviour which in turn can lead to more disappointing experiences.  The Law of Attraction states that what we focus on, persists.

Some people deal with disappointment more easily than others.

Disappointment can hit us hard... and sometimes the feelings and thoughts associated with disappointment can last for a long time.  If they persist, they can have such a negative impact on our quality of life, on our ability to achieve goals and to live the kind of life we want.

Because disappointment is a human experience that everyone has at some stage, we all have to work out ways of dealing with it.

Here are some are suggestions:

  • Take a few minutes before you respond.  Often when we are disappointed we have a "knee-jerk reaction", we may say or do things we later regret.  But if you give yourself time, you are more likely to respond in a more appropriate way
  • Ask yourself: "Am I disappointed because I didn't get my own way??" in other words, is my reaction childlike?
  • Ask yourself if there was something you could have done that would have resulted in a different outcome e.g. when you were bored if you had gone for a walk rather than eat the block of chocolate, perhaps you wouldn't have felt disappointed
  • Become aware of what you are thinking.  Negative thoughts need to be stopped and changed to something more positive or neutral e.g. "this always happens to me", "I knew it wouldn't work out" can be changed to "I arrived on time" "I got here when I said I would"
  • Shift your focus: instead of focusing on the negative of what's happened, focus on opportunities or what you are able to do e.g. when your friends cancel at the last minute, disappointment is a natural reaction but it can also give you a chance to read that book you've wanted to read but haven't had time
  • Write out the experience that created the disappointment, and write out your thoughts and reactions to it: often writing things out helps us clarify the situation, clarify our thoughts and feelings, help us work through things which in turn helps us let go
  • If the disappointment you are experiencing is deep-seated you may need to talk to someone about it e.g. someone you trust or a counsellor to help you work through your reactions and let them go so that you can move on with your life

The disappointment I have most difficulty dealing with is the disappointment that I create e.g. not completing something when I said I would because I keep putting it off (yeah, sometimes I procrastinate!).  If I can't let go of the disappointment within a short period of time, I always write it out and write out my thoughts and feelings about it.  This helps me effectively work through my disappointment and let it go more easily than if I keep it inside.

How do you deal with disappointment?  Click on the comment link below and share your thoughts... it's always great to hear from you!

Confidence: 5 Things It Is Not!!

Confidence is an essential ingredient for successfully achieving goals... to get anywhere in life you have to have a degree (preferably a strong degree) of confidence.

Many of us would like to have more confidence because we recognise the limitations a lack of confidence can have in certain areas of our life e.g. social life, in our work, at home, financially.

Although confidence is a characteristic we want to develop and strengthen, there are several untruths, myths, mistaken beliefs and downright wrong ideas about what confidence is.

Here are 5 common mistaken thoughts about confidence:

  1. "Being shy or lacking confidence is the way I am" is absolutely not true.  It's only the way you think you are and keep telling yourself you are.  If you continually think of yourself as being shy, as not being confident, you are in fact reinforcing that behaviour in you.  It's important to become aware of your self talk and the words you use to describe yourself
  2. Believing your parents being shy has caused you to be shy is a fallacy.  People are not born shy; there is no shyness gene!  People become shy because they have learned to behave and act in a certain way.  Shyness becomes a habit.  Since shyness is a learned behaviour it means that it can be unlearned and replaced with more confident behaviour (true!)
  3. Arrogance is sometimes mistaken for confidence but they are completely different things.  Arrogance is more about controlling, one-upmanship, feelings of superiority or having the right way of thinking and believing.
  4. Being confident is bragging about yourself -- if someone continually talks about his or her confidence and achievements they are generally very insecure.  It's almost like they are trying to convince themselves they are confident.  Confidence comes from within and doesn't need to be, and typically isn't, stated to everybody else.
  5. Confidence and competence are the same thing -- this is completely wrong because they are 2 very different things.  Competence is your ability to do something whereas confidence is your belief about your competence.  People are a disaster waiting to happen if they lack competence and yet have an over inflated confidence in a particular area e.g. someone who has watched medical television programs and thinks they are competent to do surgery without having studied medicine!

Confidence is something many of us need to work on.  And it is essential to develop and strengthen your confidence if you want to successfully achieve your goals.

There is a great book I highly recommend you look at if your confidence could do with a boost... Unstoppable Confidence is full of easy to learn and apply techniques to develop and strengthen your confidence in all areas of your life.  It's a great book... and worth checking out. I bought it several months ago and wished I had come across it years ago!

Achieving Goals: 5 Common Reasons Why We Don't Successfully Achieve Our Goals

We all set goals... some goals we can easily achieve, whereas other goals provide more of a challenge!  And sometimes we just don't achieve them.

5 Common Reasons Why We Don't Successfully Achieve Our Goals:

  • Vague goals -- having vague goals produces vague results.  One of the keys to successfully achieving any goal is to be very clear about what you want to achieve.  You may not know all the details but you at least need to know what you are "aiming" for.  You need to know what your target is... if you don't know what you are aiming for, how will you know if and when you have achieved it?
  • Lack of plan -- often we can have a great goal we want to achieve, for example, set up a website for  a business with no website design experience or skills (this was actually one of my goals less than a year ago) but have got no idea how to go about it.  You need to have a plan of attack... you need to know what you need to do, when you need to do it, and how you're going to do it.  Without a  structured plan made up of easy to accomplish steps you'll find yourself doing many things and getting nowhere fast.
  • Distractions -- you set a goal that will change your life in some way e.g. losing weight, saving money for a new car, changing career... setting goals means you have to make changes in your life in order to achieve this goal.  Distractions will happen along the way... distractions are inevitable.  If your commitment to your goal isn't that strong, distractions will win and take your focus from your goal... and your goal is abandoned.  When goals are abandoned and not achieved, nothing in your life changes.
  • Thoughts and beliefs -- you may have a very clear goal, e.g. lose weight and get fit, you may have a solid plan to achieve your goal, you may consistently take the necessary action to achieve your goal, but your predominant thoughts and underlying beliefs may in fact prevent you from ever achieving your goal e.g. "I've been on diets before and they haven't worked", "I hate doing exercise", "losing weight is no fun", "I will never lose weight".  If your thoughts and beliefs aren't aligned with your goal, it is highly unlikely you will never achieve your goal.
  • Giving up -- obstacles, problems, rejections and failure can dent our confidence and be difficult to overcome.  All too often people give up on their goals too soon, frequently just before they would have been achieved.  The reality is: you will come across obstacles, problems and difficulties in your journey to achieve your goal, but it's important to persevere, to keep going, and find solutions to difficulties.  If you give up on your goal... nothing in your life changes.  And the bottom line is... if you truly want to achieve something, you will find a way!

Have you experienced any of these reasons for not achieving your goal? What is the biggest obstacle you have to achieve your goals?  Click on the comment link below and let me know the obstacles you have in achieving goals.
